1974年，牛津大学教授约瑟夫·考普兰德（杰瑞德·哈里斯饰）坚信世间存在着用现有科学无法解释的超自然现象，为了证明自己的观点，他集结了布莱恩（山姆·克拉弗林饰）、哈利（Rory Fleck-Byrne饰）、克莉丝（Erin Richards饰）等三名年轻人组成实验小组，对少女简·哈珀（奥利维亚·库克饰）展开研究。此前在简的身上曾发生过无数匪夷所思的事情，她自称有一个看不见的朋友艾薇搅扰了她的人生，事件影响甚广，连官方都承认简被恶魔附体。

简彻底地失去了理智，艾薇显形并且杀害了克里希与哈里。然而这都不能阻止卡普兰的决心。简向他坦白：她自己就是“艾薇”，逃过了当年的那场火灾。布莱恩遭到了卡普兰的攻击，醒来之后发现自己被关在了简的房间。卡普兰坚信治愈简的唯一方法就是暂时把她杀死，让艾薇离开她的身体，然后再让她复活。布莱恩与卡普兰打斗起来，并且赶在太晚之前复活了简的心脏。然而，简却把布莱恩赶出了房间，她在艾薇的作用之下开始燃烧起来。布莱恩只能绝望而无助地看着简与卡普兰在密封的房间中被活活烧死。

布莱恩最终出现在一所疯人院当中，他把脑袋磕向摄影机，并且喃喃自语“真相就在它的里面”。电影的结尾，布莱恩伸出手掌，上面显现了一团火焰。
